Daily Language Review: Students practice grammar, punctuation, mechanics, usage and sentence editing on a daily basis. Students can now explain the reasoning behind all of their editing choices. We take turns presenting our corrections and explanations in front of the class.
Math: We are currently working on geometry, as well as constantly revisiting the concept of regrouping with two and three digit numbers. In geometry, we are focusing on the following terminology: vertices, sides, angles. We see how to apply these terms with the following plane shapes: triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons. Next, we will cover solid shapes, such as spheres and rectangular prisms. These solid figures use terms such as edges and surfaces, in addition to vertices and angles as well. You can support your child at home by pointing out these plane shapes and solid figures and discussing their different characteristics mentioned above.
Daily 5/CAFE: Our reading this trimester has been focused on informational text. We have learned how to read and comprehend factual text. Our two most recent strategies have been under the C (Comprehension) of our CAFE board. Students have been practicing identifying literary elements while reading independently: characters, setting, story events, conflict, and resolution. You can support your child's reading at home by reading aloud with them and asking questions pertaining to these literary elements. The second strategy students have been practicing in order to improve their comprehension of higher leveled text is identifying and explaining cause and effect relationships found in both fiction and non-fiction text.
Writing: We are focusing on informational writing this trimester. The challenging part for students to grasp is how to provide ONLY factual information. We are definitely getting there through whole group editing approach, when students have the chance to provide compliments and constructive feedback to one another. Students are working on a variety of informational pieces, ranging from topics they are experts in to topics requiring research, such as state and animal reports.
Spelling: Please have your child consistently log into spelling city to take advantage of all of the spelling practice available through the assignments I have assigned throughout the year. There are only a few students who fully complete the assignments for each lesson. It is no coincidence that these students are stronger spellers when it comes to writing and editing! They are more confident with their high frequency words, also found through the assignments on spelling city. If you are ever having trouble logging on at home, PLEASE do not hesitate to let me know.
Social Studies: The students love our government unit! We have learned about the three branches, and we are going to learn how a bill becomes a law in the United States. I will have the students participate in reader's theater to learn the many steps a bill has to take along its journey to become a law. Each student will have a different role to play. They might even have the chance to pass a law for our class! We'll have to vote for our class president soon, and see if he/she approves or vetoes the proposed bill.
Stem: Students are learning the basics of coding through fun and engaging activities.
Important Dates:
